ELPAC stands for English Learner Parent Advisory Council.
It is a group that brings together parents and guardians of English learners to provide input, share ideas, and work with the school district to support the success of multilingual learners and their families.
In Massachusetts, school districts that serve 100 or more English learners or in which English learners make up at least 5% of the student population, whichever is less, are required to establish an English Learner Parent Advisory Council. Other districts may also choose to establish an ELPAC.
What Does ELPAC Do?
ELPAC provides families with an opportunity to have a voice in their students' education. The council may:
- Provide feedback and recommendations about English learner programs and services.
- Help families better understand language education programs and their rights.
- Share family perspectives and concerns with school and district leaders.
- Support communication and collaboration between families, educators, and the school community.
- Help identify resources and opportunities that support English learners and their families.
- Encourage meaningful family engagement in the education of multilingual learners.
ELPAC is intended to be a partnership between families and schools. Family perspectives and experiences can help schools strengthen programs and ensure that the needs of English learners are being addressed.
Who Can Participate?
Parents and guardians of students who are English learners are encouraged to participate. Families do not need to have previous experience serving on a committee or council. Your experiences, questions, ideas, and perspectives are valuable.
