The Carpentry Program



Overview

The mill and house carpentry department at Taconic offers complete training in woodworking, new house construction, building repair and remodeling. Students are trained to use all of the essential tools, machinery, and materials. Instruction is given in blueprint readings, layout and design. Juniors and seniors remodel or construct homes here in the community.


 

Grade 9

  • Shop safety
  • Basic wood joints
  • Building materials
  • Hand tool safety
  • Stationary power tool safety


Grade 10

  • Emphasis on safety
  • More advanced study of stationary and portable power tools
  • Emphasis on working with others
  • Construction technology is taught in the related class


Grade 11

  • Students will learn the safety aspects of construction site conditions
  • The carpenter will be taught foundation layout, basic formwork
  • The erection of staging and scaffolding
  • Introduction to exterior framing and sheathing of sidewalls
  • Rafter and roof construction understanding
  • Interior framing of walls and ceilings


Grade 12

  • Carpenters will learn to layout buildings using instruments
  • Construct foundations using various form systems
  • Building exterior framing of wood, steel, and composites
  • Students will have abilities to build stairs and rafters
  • Interior walls dry walled and taped
  • Various door frames and hardware installs
  • Cabinetry and interior finishes

 


 

Training/ Skills You will Learn:

  • Affix wood, vinyl, and metal siding to exterior walls
  • Apply stucco, masonry veneer, and other exterior finishes
  • Complete roofing jobs by closing up valleys and ensuring watertight seals
  • Finish drywall surfaces using compounds, joint reinforcing tapes, and other materials
  • Measure, cut, and install interior moldings around floors, doors, windows, and ceilings
  • Build, lay out, and install kitchen base and wall cabinets, countertops, and backsplashes
  • Install bathroom fixtures and other finishing items
  • Build and finish closets and architectural details
  • Lay carpet, hardwood flooring, laminate flooring, tile, and other flooring materials
  • Paint and apply wallpaper and other surface finishes
