Health Technology

Healthcare is one of the fastest growing industries and offers many diverse career opportunities.

The Taconic High School Health Technology program provides students the pathway into this rewarding and challenging field. Starting with “Career Exploratory” in 9th grade, students practice “hands-on” skills, as well as learn the foundations in health care: safety, infection control and communication. Health Tech I, our 10th grade program, adds a clinical experience in local long-term care and community-based senior health facilities. 11th grade Health Tech 2 students study the Massachusetts Certified Nurse Aide Curriculum and upon completion, are eligible to take the state certification exam. Health Tech 3, offers our 12th-graders the option to participate in cooperative education and work in a health care setting, or learn advanced skills in the classroom, while attending academic classes every other week.

Year by Year

Grade 9

"Career Exploratory" 9th-graders learn about the various jobs in healthcare, the basics of how to work safely, ways to prevent the spread of infection, and effective communication. They also receive American Heart Association Heartsaver Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid training. "Career Exploratory" is 2 class periods each day.

Grade 10

During this year, Health Tech 1 students have an introduction to anatomy and physiology of the human body and disease processes. Safety, including the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) 10-hour training, and infection control lessons continue. Other healthcare topics, such as legal issues and patient rights are covered. The community clinical rotations allow students to learn to be part of the healthcare team. They practice communication and clinical skills taught in the classroom, to prepare for direct patient care as 11th-graders. Students attend Health Tech 1 class 2-3 periods each day.

Grade 11

Health Tech 2 students follow the Massachusetts Certified Nurse Aide Curriculum and gain the knowledge and competence to earn their certification as a CNA. Skills are learned and practiced both in the classroom lab and in a local long-term care facility. Also during this year, Alzheimers Caregiver Training, through the Alzheimer's Association, and American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation-Automatic External Defibrillator for the Healthcare Provider, and First Aid are taught. Students attend Health Tech 2 all day, every other week, alternating with a week of academic classes.

Grade 12

Senior year brings the option of applying for cooperative education. This allows a student in good academic standing to be employed in a healthcare setting, earning a paycheck and school credit, every other week—and attend academic classes on the alternate weeks. 12th-grade students can choose to remain at school, in Health Tech 3, learning advanced Certified Nurse Aide skills, as well as preparing for continuing their education at the post-secondary level. Students attend academic classes every other week, alternating with cooperative work or Health Tech 3 class.
