August 23, 2011—A message from Superintendent Eberwein
Hello, this is Jake Eberwein, Superintendent of the Pittsfield Public Schools. I am pleased to welcome you to the 2011/2012 school year. We have and will continue to set high expectations for each student, and pledge to work diligently to support the growth and progress of each child under our care. I send this message to call your attention to the materials sent to your homes recently, including the parent handbook, health and emergency information, and the school lunch materials. Please review these materials carefully and return the completed forms to your child’s school. I will emphasize that it is critical that you complete the free and reduced lunch form regardless of whether you feel you are eligible or not. These forms play an important role in enabling us to access state and federal grants, so your cooperation is greatly appreciated. We ask that you update contact information so that you can receive these messages by phone or via email. Unfortunately, we overlooked a space for the email addresses on the health and emergency forms, thus I will ask that you print your email address on the form. All Connect Ed messages will be posted on the district or school’s website. I encourage you to visit our district website at www.pittsfield.net where many resources can be accessed. I will close by encouraging you to stay connected to your child’s school. Whether volunteering, helping your child to complete homework, monitoring their out-of-school activities, or just attending school functions…..your involvement is important to us and to them. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s school if you have any questions or concerns. Our goal in 2011/12 is to raise both expectations and aspirations for all our children – we look forward to working with you in achieving that goal. Thank you for listening and have a nice weekend.
March 22, 2011—A message from Superintendent Eberwein
Good evening parents, guardians, and students, this is your school Superintendent Jake Eberwein. I am pleased to announce that our school system has been awarded a significant physical education grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
Using this grant we are launching our initiative called BALANCING THE EQUATION, which is designed to provide our students with the tools to improve their physical fitness and learn proper nutrition—both leading to a healthy lifestyle. As part of this grant we are fortunate to partner with Operation Better Start at Berkshire Health Systems, The Pittsfield Y, and Pittsfield Community Television.
As grantees, we are required to collect data that aligns with the goals of promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles for our students. Throughout this year, we will be collecting data from randomly selected first, fourth, seventh and tenth graders. We will be reporting the number of students who engaged in 60 minutes of daily physical activity and the number of students who consumed fruit and vegetables (2-3 times or more) throughout the day. We are sending a packet of materials to families of children who have been randomly selected to collect data in the coming week. While participation is completely voluntary, I strongly encourage families to support this health initiative. All information sent to the U.S. Department of Education is completely anonymous. Students not selected will still benefit from all the BALANCING THE EQUATION plans throughout this year and during the next two years of the grant.
If you have any questions, you can ask your child’s physical education teacher or call Linda Avalle, Curriculum Coordinator for Health and Physical Education at 499-9523.
We look forward to bringing the tools for total health to the students in the Pittsfield Public Schools.
